Description
Members of two leading Indonesian fact-checking organisations have hit out at Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for accusing fact-checkers of being "too politically biased" and engaging in "censorship." Zuckerberg made the comments on January 7 when he announced the end of Meta's third-party fact-check programme on Facebook and Instagram in the United States.
"When fact-checking is considered a threat to freedom of expression and labelled as politically biased; I think such claims are entirely baseless," says Wahyu Dhyatmika, CEO of Tempo, which runs a fact-check operation.
Meta's third-party fact-checking programme was launched in 2016 and relied on independent media and fact-check organisations to flag false content spreading on its platforms. Analysts warn the tech giant's decision to terminate the programme could break local laws if it's extended beyond US borders. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
