In 2024, 663,000 babies were born in France, 2.2% fewer than the previous year, which corresponds to the lowest number of births over one year since 1946, according to the French National Institute for Statistics (INSEE). The total fertility rate (TFR) stood at 1.59 children per woman in metropolitan France in 2024, its lowest level for over a century. It was also 1.59 in 1919, at the end of the First World War.
