Description
Chile announces that it will bid for the expansion of its main port to accommodate larger vessels and increase its competitiveness, following the start of operations of the Peruvian mega-port of Chancay, funded by China.
Located on the central coast of Chile, 100 km from Santiago, the port of San Antonio currently has the capacity to handle 2.5 million TEUs or 20-foot standard containers (33 cubic meters).
The first stage of the project will increase the port's capacity to 4 million TEUs by 2036.
"It is a project we need in order to face the international trade projected for the coming decades," says Chilean Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Munoz Abogabir during the tender presentation held in the capital. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
