Description
The Virgin and Child, the emblematic statue enthroned at the top of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica in Marseille, is getting a makeover this year. The symbolic start date for the work is 2 February, with the scaffolding due to go up at the beginning of the month. The statue, known to the locals as 'Bonne-mere' (Good Mother), will be gilded with 30,000 gold leafs over the summer. The refurbishment was made possible by a fundraising campaign aimed at individuals and companies, which raised 1.1 million euros. "This statue is loved by all the people of Marseille, because at one time or another, many people of Marseille have turned to it for inspiration and hope," explains the basilica's rector, Father Olivier Spinosa. At the highest point in the city, at the top of this 11-metre high statue, is the 150-year-old statue. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES N°36VT8X7
