Thousands of worshippers have gathered for the annual “holy pig” festival in northern Taiwan, which sees the carcasses of giant overfed swine offered to the gods. Local owners compete to display the largest pig, with the winner taking home a trophy.
This year, the winning title went to a pig weighing 1508 Taiwanese catties (904.8 kg). The annual ritual is a cultural cornerstone for the island's Hakka community, who make up about 15 percent of Taiwan's population.
