Description
People in the streets of Bukavu, the capital of the DR Congo's South Kivu province, react as the Rwandan-backed armed group M23 announced a humanitarian "ceasefire" from Tuesday in the country's perennially explosive east. Last week, the M23 and Rwandan troops seized Goma -- the provincial capital of North Kivu. Fighting has stopped in the city, but clashes have spread to the neighbouring province of South Kivu, raising fears of an M23 advance to its capital, Bukavu. "I think it's a total distraction, and the Congolese government should not take it into account," says Amos Bisimwa, an activist, while Jean-Claude Abamungu, a motorcyclist, believes "The ceasefire is good," adding the "ceasefire can help the FARDC to reorganise properly."
