Description
Slovenia's Nova Gorica and Italy's Gorizia are joint holders of this year's title of European culture capital. Formerly divided by a border, which has now virtually disappeared, the two towns are quite different: Italy's Gorizia was founded more than 1,000 years ago, while Yugoslav authorities decided to build Nova (New) Gorica in 1948 as a symbol of the might of the Communist system. The town's future changed when Slovenia broke away from Yugoslavia and joined the EU. "Differences should be cherished, but at the same time, borders are there to be overcome," says Anja Medved, a film director from Nova Gorica. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
