Ukrainian servicemen injured in the now three-year war work through their exercises in a sports hall at the Pushcha Vodytsia centre in Kyiv, one of 488 rehabilitation facilities across the country. “I want to get rid of this evil as quickly as possible and live a civilian life,” says one of them. The Ukrainian government estimates that there are five million former combatants to be supported in the post-conflict period, but according to psychologist Oleksy Didenko, Ukrainian society is not yet prepared for the challenge, with veterans of previous conflicts often falling prey to "addiction," "suicide" and "depression."
