Description
More than 100 people have already died this year after drinking bootleg alcohol in Turkey, where clandestine production is widespread, and bootleg alcohol is often tainted with methanol, a toxic substance that can cause blindness, liver damage and death. "There is no way for citizens to know whether the alcoholic beverage they drink contains methanol by its taste, colour or smell", warns toxicology expert Ahmet Aydin. According to the president of Turkish liquor stores, Ozgur Aybas, the main reason for the increase in such deaths is high taxes on alcohol, fuelling the production of moonshine.
