Hamas's October 7, 2023, assault launched from the Palestinian territory, just two kilometres away, tore through the 400-strong community of Kibbutz Nirim but 16 months later the kibbutz is rebuilding now that the sound of bombs subsided in Gaza. "It hurts being here" says a resident standing in the area of the kibbutz closest to the Gaza border, before adding defiantly that "we're rebuilding our resilience to feel safe again here, to feel home again here" despite acknowledging that "the war could reignite any minute."
