The Congregation of the Fathers of Betharram, which for many years ran the Catholic school in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques region of south-west France, at the centre of a huge case of physical violence and rape, says it is "very concerned" and recognises the "suffering of the children" who attended the school. It has announced financial compensation for the victims. Since last year, prosecutors have been investigating more than 100 complaints of violence, assault and rape over many decades at the boarding school. In total, 112 people have made accusations of rape and sexual assault against 11 people, eight of them now deceased, with those acts alleged to have taken place between 1955 and 2004, according to prosecutors.
