Description
Further boosts to consumer spending will need to be a key part of China's efforts to meet its five percent annual economic growth rate target announced on Wednesday, Principal Economist at The Economist Intelligence Unit, Su Yue, tells AFP. The headline figure was revealed by Premier Li Qiang at an annual Communist Party conclave, with a government work report vowing to make domestic demand the "main engine and anchor" of growth.
"There are fiscal policies and subsidies of consumption that have been provided by the central government. But I do not think it's still big enough to really, like, significantly drive up consumer sentiment," Su adds. SOUNDBITES
