Description
In conflict-hit Eastern DR Congo, members of the Nande community, including Wazalendo militia fighters, explain how they seek protection, blessing and advice in the region's ongoing conflict by speaking to their ancestors in traditional 'veranda' huts. The Wazalendo (meaning "Patriots" in Swahili), is a disparate group of militias who are fighting the M23 rebels alongside the Congolese army. "The war goes on because at one point we didn't respect our culture," says Sangala Paluku, a local healer. "This cultural power is helping us in the war and we are supposed to protect this power," says Assa Paluku Mahamba, Wazalendo group coordinator. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
