Description
The California port of Long Beach, a major US hub for container ships transporting goods imported from China, has seen shippers "front-loading imports in advance of tariff implementation," says Mario Cordero, CEO of the port. US President Donald Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese imports to 20 percent this week, citing Beijing's failure to tackle the illicit fentanyl trade. "In the first Trump administration, when we moved with tariffs against China, the impact to the Port of Long Beach is we had a 20.5% reduction on imports from China year to year," says Cordero.
