Syrians rally in a demonstration as military reinforcements set out from the northern city of Idlib to support Syria's new authority in ongoing clashes with fighters loyal to deposed ruler Bashar al-Assad in the coastal province of Latakia.
Fierce fighting between Syrian security forces and gunmen loyal to Assad killed 48 people on Thursday, a war monitor said. The fighting occurred in Latakia, the heartland of the ousted president's Alawite minority, who were considered bastions of support during his rule. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
