Description
In the outskirts of central Lima, in a dusty desert landscape, women dressed in vivid colors make traditional textiles and jewelry in an environment a far cry from their origins in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.
The Shipibo settled in Cantagallo, Lima, thirty years ago, fleeing the violence of guerrilla warfare in the jungle, but many of these women say they came to the capital to provide better opportunities for their children.
Now far from home, these Indigenous women continue to speak their dialect and make their traditional crafts, while teaching their children to carry on their culture. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
