Description
Indonesian authorities rescue a critically endangered baby Sumatran elephant after it became separated from its mother, a local conservation agency official said. The two-month-old male calf was found at an oil palm plantation in Riau province on the western island of Sumatra after residents alerted authorities. Sumatran elephants are on the brink of extinction with only about 2,400-2,800 left in the world, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.
"If its health condition is good and the behaviors are normal, it is possible that the baby elephant will be returned to its herd," said Mustofa Lubis, a Riau Conservation Agency official. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
