Description
In the community of La Nueva Cruzadilla, 100 km southeast of the capital, parents fear the transfer of their children confined in juvenile detention centers to adult prisons following a controversial legal reform in El Salvador.
"How are the minors going to be with the adults?" says Margarita Ramirez, 39, whose 16-year-old, Dustin, is in a reform school in Ahuachapan.
The eleven minors from the community were sentenced to five years of confinement and five more years of probation for belonging to "illicit groups," or in other words, being part of a gang.
Authorities claim the minors will have their own pavilions, separate from the adults. A promise that does not reassure the parents. There are also concerns that in adult prisons, there are no reintegration programs for these offenders. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
