Prosecutors seeking to make a Michigan school shooter’s mother responsible for the deaths of four students told jurors Thursday that the tragedy could have been easily prevented when she was confronted with his violent drawings just a few hours earlier. Assistant Prosecutor Marc Keast said Jennifer Crumbley was aware of her son’s deteriorating mental health and knew that a gun drawn on a math assignment resembled the same firearm that Ethan Crumbley had used at a shooting range. But instead of taking the boy home when called by staff, Jennifer and husband James Crumbley allowed him to stay at Oxford High School. Four students were killed and more were wounded in November 2021. “Jennifer Crumbley didn't pull the trigger that day, but she is responsible for those deaths,” Keast said in his opening statement. Forty-five-year-old Jennifer Crumbley is charged with involuntary manslaughter, the first time that a parent has been charged in a mass U.S. school shooting. Prosecutors say the Crumbleys were grossly negligent and that their son's actions were foreseeable. “The prosecution has charged Jennifer Crumbley with involuntary manslaughter in an effort to make the community feel better,” defense attorney Shannon Smith told jurors. “In an effort to make people feel like someone is being held responsible. In an effort to send a message to gun owners. And none of those problems will be solved by charging Jennifer Crumbley with involuntary manslaughter.” James Crumbley will go on trial in March.
