Description
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have officially secured the requisite numbers of delegates to be considered their parties’ presumptive nominees.
The designation allows the candidates to coordinate directly with the national Democratic and Republican parties, although they aren't considered official nominees until the summer conventions.
It was a foreseeable outcome, with both candidates’ intraparty opponents having shuttered their campaigns, thus setting up this year’s rematch of the 2020 general election.
The Associated Press only uses the “presumptive nominee” designation once a candidate has captured the number of delegates needed to win a majority vote at the national party conventions this summer.
