Description
A new exhibit celebrating the work of artist Andy Warhol has opened in the British capital.
London's Halcyon Gallery has brought together a vast collection of the artist's works, featuring canvases never before seen on public display.
Warhol was obsessed with ideas of celebrity and brand and could elevate anything he put on canvas to iconic status.
This image of Marilyn Monroe remains one of Pop Art's most recognisable artworks of the 20th century, alongside the once humble and now famed tins of Campbell's soup.
Other works on display include portraits of actors John Wayne,
James Dean and Jane Fonda among others, side by side with pop culture staples like Mickey Mouse and Superman.
Queen Elizabeth II, one of the most famous women of the 20th century was painted and photographed countless times throughout her long reign.
Warhol's portrait of her, which will also be on display at the Halcyon Gallery, remains unmistakable.
Exhibit curator Kate Brown says Warhol's influence is still relevant, even informing how social media is viewed on certain platforms.
"I think it is not by accident that the frame we think about putting on Instagram, that image, is exactly the proportions that Andy Warhol put many of his main protagonists in, or major adverts and campaigns and logos within his lifetime."
