Pickerington police report that the stepfather of a junior high student died by suicide at Pickerington Ridgeview Junior High School Thursday morning.
Police Chief Tod Cheney told 10TV that an officer and a detective responded to a call for a possible criminal act by a parent at the junior high school. When they arrived, the man was seated in an office.
The responding detective went into the office to speak with the stepparent, and the two had a brief conversation before the man produced a handgun and took his own life, according to Cheney. No other students or faculty was hurt and the detective was uninjured.
According to Cheney, the child, mother and father were not in the room, but in the vicinity when the incident happened.
Cheney said that he does not believe that the man was threatening anybody at the time. Police did not disclose any details of the reported criminal behavior involving the parent.
"Definitely a tragedy," Cheney said. "Luckily no one was hurt as far as students, faculty."'
Police dispatch initially told 10TV that officers received a report of an active shooter just before 10 a.m. at the junior high school. The school was on lockdown following the incident and students and staff were safely evacuated.
Students were taken to Pickerington Central High School. Parents are being asked by police to pick up their children at the high school field house via Lockville Road and Opportunity Way and exit through Opportunity Way and Hill Road South. Parents must bring their ID to sign their child out.
Pickerington Local School District sent the following message to parents after the incident:
"Ridgeview Stem Jr. High School classes and after school activities will be canceled tomorrow, Friday February 3, 2023. While no students were witness to the tragic incident that occurred this morning at Ridgeview, we understand that students and staff may need support as they process what occurred today. Counseling services will be available tomorrow at Pickerington High School Central in the gymnasium 8:30-12:30."
