Description
A convoy of trucks carrying food, water and other emergency supplies provided by the Egyptian Red Crescent and the United Nations arrived in Gaza on Saturday to help hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
The 20 trucks, including three from the World Food Program carrying 47 metric tonnes of emergency food including canned tuna, wheat flour, pasta, canned beans and canned tomato paste, crossed the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza.
“Today, 20 trucks were allowed across the border all containing emergency supplies, three of which were WFP trucks, I’m happy to say, containing life saving food on board. What we plan to do it is distribute that but this cannot be the last convoy," said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.
“We need to have sustained, safe access to be able to get our trucks across the border so we can feed the millions of people that are dependent on emergency food',' she added.
Since the beginning of the crisis, some 520,000 people have received WFP food assistance that is ready to help 1.1 million people in Gaza over the next two months: 930 metric tonnes of emergency food supplies at the Rafah border, ready to be brought to Gaza when access is allowed again.
The assistance includes fresh bread delivered daily to people in Gaza in UN shelters and supply of flour to contracted bakeries, which produce bread for distribution, and WFP has also provided 275,000 people with cash vouchers that can be redeemed in grocery shops.
