Description
In remarks from Tel Aviv, President Joe Biden vowed the United States will not repeat the world's inaction after the Holocaust, insisting "we will not stand by and do nothing again" as Israel responds to the recent attack by Hamas.
Biden arrived in Israel earlier Wednesday on mission to contain Israeli-Hamas war and encourage delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
In his remarks, Biden confirmed that Israel "agreed the humanitarian assistance can begin to move from Egypt to Gaza," with the understanding that inspections must be allowed and that the aid should go to civilians and not Hamas.
Israel cut off the flow of food, fuel and water to Gaza following the recent deadly attack on Israel by Hamas.
Mediators have been struggling to break a deadlock over providing supplies to desperate civilians, aid groups and hospitals.
Biden said the Hamas attack on Gaza earlier this month has been "described as Israel's 9/11."
But he said, "for a nation the size of Israel, it was like 15 9/11s."
Biden said while he understands the rage and desire for justice, he urged Israelis not to be consumed by it.
"After 911, we were enraged in the United States. While we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes," he said.
