Description
Ukrainian zoo staff stayed behind to care for animals amid Russia's invasion.
Veterinary specialists, zookeepers, electricians and their families are living at the Kyiv Zoo to care for the animals. They call it a "zoo military commune," and hide in the zoo's shelter at night.
The director says they can't evacuate the almost 4,000 animals because they would not be able to provide adequate veterinary care or cage transportation.
A sanctuary east of Kyiv was able to move some of its big cats and an African wild dog o escape attacks. They were driven to a zoo in Poland by a truck driver and could be moved further west.
