Description
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters that President Donald Trump's secretary of Education Linda McMahon wants to "detonate the Department of Education" and that "the blast radius of this order will harm nearly every child, every teacher, every family and every community.”
Senate Democrats held a press conferences criticizing the various cuts to federal government agencies that are being targeted to "give tax breaks to his billionaire buddies."
“And it’s consistent with the entire way that they are approaching the first six months of this administration. Billionaires don't need Medicaid. So to them, it doesn't matter if Medicaid disappears and rural hospitals close and addiction treatment centers shutter their doors because the billionaires will still get their health care," Sen. Chris Murphy added.
This comes as the deadline to pass a federal budget looms over Congress in March.
House Republicans last week passed a budget blueprint that seeks some $880 billion in savings over 10 years from the committee that handles health care spending, including Medicaid. Democrats warn cuts to the program are unavoidable under the GOP's plan, yet Trump said last week about the state-federal health care program: “We’re not going to touch it.”
“The bottom line is Democrats are working to avoid a (government) shutdown. If there's a shutdown, it's on the Republicans back. They yet have to– They have yet given us their proposal," Schumer told reporters on Thursday.
