Description
South Carolina is preparing this week to execute a man by firing squad, a capital punishment method that hasn’t been used in the U.S. in nearly 15 years.
Since the Supreme Court lifted its ban on capital punishment in 1976, states have used five different methods to execute condemned prisoners: lethal injection, electrocution, lethal gas, firing squad and hanging.
In the modern era of capital punishment, the use of firing squads has been rare.
The last one took place in 2010. But on Friday, South Carolina is set to resume its use as Brad Sigmon is scheduled to die by firing squad.
Sigmon was convicted in the 2001 baseball bat killings of his ex-girlfriend’s parents at their home.
