Description
President Donald Trump brought up Springfield, Ohio during his address to Congress Tuesday night.
The city located about 45 miles west of Columbus was in the headlines last summer over false rumors of Haitian immigrants in Springfield eating pets.
During Trump's speech Tuesday night, he said former President Joe Biden brought in "illegal immigrants to overwhelm schools, hospitals and communities."
"Towns like Aurora, Colorado, and Springfield, Ohio, buckled under the weight of the migrant occupation and corruption like no one has ever seen before. Beautiful towns destroyed," Trump said.
Springfield received dozens of threats as the rumors swirled last September. City officials previously said they found no credible evidence of Haitians eating pets.
Since 2020, about 15,000 Haitians arrived in the city under the Temporary Protected Status program.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost previously said that migrants aren't the problem, but "way too many migrants in a short period of time."
In response, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine authored an op-ed in the New York Times saying the rhetoric at the time was hurtful. He added that the immigrants are in the state legally.
The Trump administration recently shortened the Temporary Protected Status of more than 500,000 Haitians in the U.S. by six months.
