Description
President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday that he can't believe he said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a dictator after describing him as such earlier this month.
Trump has called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator for not holding elections during wartime, when much of Ukraine is under Russian occupation, its soldiers are on the frontlines and the country is under martial law.
Asked by a reporter if he still thinks Zelenskyy is a dictator, Trump said: "Did I say that? I can't believe I said that. Next question."
Trump also has falsely accused Kyiv of starting the war and warned that he “better move fast” to negotiate an end to the conflict or risk not having a nation to lead. Zelenskyy responded by saying Trump was living in a Russian-made “disinformation space.”
Zelenskyy will visit the White House on Friday to sign a long-sought minerals deal that will closely tie the two countries together for years to come.
Trump has framed the emerging deal that would give the U.S. access to Ukraine's deposits of so-called rare earth minerals — used in the aerospace, defense and nuclear industries — as a chance for Kyiv to pay back the U.S. for aid already sent for the war effort under Democratic President Joe Biden.
Zelenskyy said in a news conference Wednesday in Kyiv that a framework of an economic deal had been reached, but that it did not yet include U.S. security guarantees, which his country sees as vital. The full agreement could hinge on the upcoming talks in Washington.
"I think I have a very good relationship with President Zelenskyy. And now we're, you know, we're doing the deal and we're going to be in there. We're going to be actually in there digging, digging our hearts out," said Trump, speaking to reporters from the Oval Office Thursday during a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
