The Lancaster Police Department released body camera video showing an officer's initial response to what is now being investigated as a double homicide on Tuesday. Police say an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of North Broad Street around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a man, later identified as 26-year-old Kyle Varney, "acting out of the ordinary and in need of evaluation." The 911 caller said no violence was happening and Varney did not have access to weapons. When an LPD officer got to the scene at 5:42 p.m., a woman can be seen on video running up to the officer and saying two family members were killed. The woman is also heard saying "he's got a shotgun." Screaming could be heard on the bodycam video a few seconds later. The woman can be heard saying "he just shot her." Police say Varney fired a shot at another woman at the scene. Bodycam video shows the officer taking cover behind his patrol vehicle and firing three shots. Police say Varney's progress toward the woman stopped and his weapon was dropped to the ground. The officer said Varney then ran to the back of the house. At 5:44 p.m., the initial officer and another officer can be heard trying to ask a woman suffering from a gunshot wound in the front yard if she could crawl or walk to them. The officers were then trying to get a shield ready to protect themselves while moving up to her. Two minutes later, as the officers tried to get to the woman, Varney appeared from the back of the house unarmed. The officers, with their guns drawn, told Varney to put his hands in the air and walk toward them. Varney walked and then crawled to the officers and he was taken into custody. Police say Varney was shot at least once, though they did not say if the wound is from the officer's gunfire. Two officers provided care to the woman shot at the scene and took her to a nearby medic in their patrol car. She was later taken to a hospital. Police Chief Nicholas Snyder said Tuesday night the woman was shot in the head. Officers searched the home and found two men dead with apparent gunshot wounds. Snyder previously said there is a connection between the suspect and the three victims, but didn't elaborate further. The woman who called 911 said she was his grandmother and that Varney threw a drink on his dad. Police say Varney has been charged with two counts of murder with gun specifications and six counts of felonious assault with gun specifications for his alleged role in the shootings. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will investigate the Lancaster officer who fired his weapon. The officer is on paid administrative leave.
