Description
The White House defended Elon Musk's expected attendance at President Donald Trump's first Cabinet meeting Wednesday morning, insisting his so-called Department of Government Efficiency affects every Cabinet Secretary and their respective departments.
“Elon is working with the Cabinet secretaries and their staff every single day to identify waste and fraud and abuse at these respective agencies,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on the White House driveway. “All of the Cabinet secretaries take the advice and direction of DOGE.”
Musk’s attendance highlights his influence over the administration.
Leavitt said members of Trump’s Cabinet would provide updates on their work at the meeting, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
Leavitt also said the acting leader of DOGE, Amy Gleason, has been working in that capacity for "several weeks, maybe a month," despite only being identified as the person running that department on Tuesday.
Asked by reporters why DOGE employees appeared to be unaware that Gleason was in charge, Leavitt doubled down, saying, "everybody knew."
"Everybody knew and we said who she was to all of you because you are hounds in the media who are so obsessed with this for some reason. So in the effort of transparency, we told you who that person is," she said.
Gleason, 53, worked from 2018 through 2021 in the United States Digital Service, an agency that has been renamed the US DOGE Service, according to her LinkedIn profile. In that role, she worked with the White House on the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic.
On the framework economic deal between the U.S. and Ukraine, Leavitt called it "absolutely pivotal" and said Trump looks forward to welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "to the White House to sign it or to visit if that's what Zelensky wants to do."
Zelenskyy is expected to come to the White House as early as Friday.
