President Donald Trump on Friday said he may put the U.S. Postal Service under the control of the Commerce Department in what would be an executive branch takeover of the agency, which has operated as an independent entity since 1970. On Monday in Washington, DC, postal workers protested against Trump’s proposal, chanting “Hell no.” Brian Renfroe, the president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, says the White House doesn’t realize what they’re jeopardizing. “Every day, over 200,000 members of our union and hundreds of thousands of members of the other postal unions serve the people of this country. We provide a constitutionally mandated universal service. Every day, we deliver 376 million pieces of mail to 169 million addresses in this country,” Renfroe told the group of protesters. He went on to add that the work of letter carriers is a large part of the US economy. But Renfroe says that maybe the postal workers shouldn’t be surprised by Trump’s idea. “Look at what we've seen over the last 30 days. I think it's very clear this administration has no interest in protecting public service, working people who are really the public good. They want to throw us away to create an unreliable, inefficient, expensive private delivery service,” Renfroe said.
