Mike DeWine nominated him on Monday. The Senate voted 31-1 while the House voted 68-27. Tressel, 72, is taking over for Jon Husted, who left the job last month after DeWine tapped him to fill the U.S. Senate seat left open by JD Vance who became vice president. He was head coach of Ohio State University's football team from 2001 to 2010. The Buckeyes won the 2002 national championship during Tressel's tenure, as well as six Big Ten championships. Tressel retired as the president of Youngstown State University a year and a half ago, a position he had held since 2014. Tressel and DeWine have repeatedly said they have not discussed if Tressel would make a run for the governorship in 2026 when DeWine retires due to term limits. For now, the two say they are just focused on the next two years.
