Description
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the helicopter crew involved in fatal crash with plane near Washington was "fairly experienced crew."
"We're going to withhold ranks and names at this point. We do know on our side who was involved," said Hegseth Thursday.
"We anticipate that the investigation will quickly be able to determine whether the aircraft was in the quarter at the right altitude at the time of the incident."
This comes after authorities say everyone aboard an American Airlines jet that collided with Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., is feared dead.
The Wednesday crash prompted a large search-and-rescue operation in the nearby Potomac River.
The jet was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. Officials say at least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River.
Officials say they were still searching for other casualties but did not believe there were any other survivors, which would make it the deadliest U.S. air crash in nearly 24 years.
