President Donald Trump is demanding an apology from the Episcopal bishop of Washington after she asked him to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and migrants in the United States illegally during a prayer service marking his inauguration.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance attended Tuesday's service at Washington National Cathedral.
Rev. Mariann Budde says the plea she made was not her opinion, but was grounded in faith and scripture.
“I thought I had an opportunity and I wanted to do it in as careful and as respectful, as grounded in our scriptures. I wasn't speaking, just this wasn't just my opinion, this is what we as Christians, people of faith, all the spectrums represented on that platform, these are the ideals to which we are invited to live our lives and to order our society,” Budde said.
The bishop also while she doesn’t agree on some of Trump’s stances, she doe not consider him an enemy.
“I don't consider him an enemy. I, I don't agree with many of his values and assumptions about American society and how to how to respond to the challenges of our time. I strongly disagree, actually, but I believe we can disagree respectfully and put our ideas out there and continue to stand for the convictions we've been given without resorting to violence of speech. Certainly not violence of action,” Budde said.
