Description
Residents of Columbus, Georgia nearby Jimmy Carter's hometown of Plains, recall personal interactions they had with the 39th president during and after his one term.
Robert Wadkins Jr., who remembers his grandmother being invited to Carter's inauguration, notes how accessible the former President was to those who lived in the area.
"Everybody has a Rosalynn Carter story or a Jimmy Carter story. Kind of personally interacting with, with them. And that makes it, you know, so much more impactful as him as a person" Wadkins Jr. said.
Zoey Decker, who was raised in Columbus and had recently moved back said Carter attended a play that Decker was performing in as a child.
"It was a very special kind of moment in my young life. I was then like probably fourth or fifth grade when that happened, so very young. And it was like, the president is here like to watch this play that I'm in.”
