Description
U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday said he hoped Trump would rethink his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, saying it could “screw up” relationships with close allies.
“I hope he rethinks it. I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do,” he told reporters in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday she is confident that a tariff war with the United States can be averted.
But her statement — the day after she held a phone call with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump — did not make clear who had offered what.
Three American citizens imprisoned for years by China arrived back in the United States late Wednesday. Their release, announced earlier by the White House, was the result of a rare diplomatic agreement with Beijing in the final months of the Biden administration.
Biden told reporters on Thursday morning that he has spoken to all of them and “I’m really happy they are home."
