Description
Another witness was called to the stand Wednesday in the murder trial for former Columbus police officer Adam Coy. Closing arguments are also expected to take place in the afternoon.
The state has called a rebuttal witness to the stand a day after the defense rested its case. Use of force expert Seth Stoughton, a law professor at the University of South Carolina, is testifying in front of the jury.
Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault in the shooting death of Andre Hill on Dec. 22, 2020.
Testimony ended on Tuesday after defense attorneys finished questioning witnesses and experts on the stand. Coy took the stand in his own defense on Monday.
The first week of the trial started on Oct. 21 with jury selection, which lasted three days. The jurors were seated and visited the scene of the shooting where Hill was killed.
The prosecution and the defense presented opening statements on Wednesday, with testimonies beginning afterward. The state called several witnesses and experts to the stand, including Columbus police officer Amy Detweiler who was with Coy when the incident happened.
The state rested its case on Monday.
The defense requested that the reckless homicide charge be dropped based on the evidence that was presented during testimony, but the judge denied the request.
Soon after, defense attorneys called Coy and use of force expert James Scanlon to the stand. Coy took the stand on Monday and gave an emotional testimony.
