Description
A young male mountain lion has returned to the wild after spending seven months at the San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center.
It was released by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in Ventura County, California on June 26th.
Before release, he was being examined carefully and was given a satellite GPS collar for tracking to help ensure his future health and wellbeing.
The mountain lion first came to San Diego Humane Society on Thanksgiving Day in 2023.
It's believed he had been hit by a car. The animal was found on the side of a road in Simi Valley, according to San Diego Humane Society.
X-rays showed that the mountain lion had a fractured hind leg. The veterinary team treated him for dehydration and malnourishment. And they carefully repaired his left tibia using a metal plate and 10 screws to realign the bones.
For the next three weeks, the mountain lion was monitored via cameras in an indoor hospital enclosure.
After veterinarians adjusted the screw placement in a second surgery, the cub required more recovery time but was moved to an outdoor enclosure for ongoing rehabilitation in mid-December.
Veterinarians later confirmed the fracture was healing properly and noted the mountain lion was becoming stronger.
