ICELAND VOLCANO ERUPTION: A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted on Wednesday (5/29), spewing red lava that threatened the coastal town of Grindavik and led to an evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.
It was the fifth eruption of the volcano since December when it came to life after centuries of dormancy.
At one point, a dark plume of ash boiled up over the crater from an interaction of magma hitting groundwater, scientists said. The town of Grindavik has already been largely evacuated and protective barriers helped to deflect the flowing lava away from the community.
