Former first lady Melania Trump made a return to her husband’s presidential campaign with a rare political appearance after months of being absent from Donald Trump’s latest run for the White House. She attended a fundraiser Saturday for the Log Cabin Republicans, an advocacy group for LGBTQ+ members of the GOP. Katherine Jellison, a history professor at Ohio University who specializes in the history of first ladies, says that Melania Trump appears to be even less visible this time around than she was in the two previous Trump presidential campaigns. But Jellison says that Mrs. Trump reminds her of another former first lady in her approach to public events. “Melania Trump most reminds me of Bess Truman in terms of, first ladies in living human memory. I think she's the person I would most compare her to, although, you know, they're very different kind of women, but the, wanting to maintain my private life and stay out of the limelight whenever possible, attitude was something that both women shared,” Jellison said. Jellison points out that in the early months of Donald Trump’s presidency, Mrs. Trump mostly stayed in New York to see her son through school. Mrs. Truman often stayed in Independence, Missouri over the White House. “It may be a more fashionably dressed first lady than Bess Truman was, and it may be going down to Florida than to Independence, Missouri, but it’s generally the same kind of mindset,” Jellison said. The event at the Palm Beach, Florida, estate that she shares with the former president took behind closed doors. It was be the first major political event for her this year.
