Description
Salvadorans protest against the mining law, reintroduced by President Nayib Bukele, in front of the National Library in San Salvador. They fear that lead will contaminate water resources.
"We could no longer irrigate the crops, we could no longer fish, we could no longer give that water to our animals, because the water contaminated by mining is useless," says 21-year-old protester Daniela Ferrufino.
In 2017, El Salvador became the first country to ban metal mining, before lifting the prohibition in December 2024. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
