Description
NOAA Fisheries has completed a groundbreaking four-month marine survey off the west coast, revealing unprecedented insights into ocean ecosystems.
Researchers aboard the Bold Horizon research ship traversed nearly 4,500 nautical miles, documenting more than 1,300 marine mammals and 90 bird species. The expedition focused on 24 different cetacean species, including whales, dolphins and porpoises.
The survey's highlight was the documentation of sperm whales, known as the planet's loudest animals, capable of producing sounds up to 230 decibels — comparable to a jet engine. These deep-diving creatures, typically found in open waters, are rarely reported in the California Current.
