Sponsored by: Jackery | From hurricanes and tropical storms to wildfires and severe flooding, this year the country has experienced so many devastating weather events.
As extreme weather becomes more frequent these days, getting and staying prepared for an emergency is a top priority for many families.
Craig Fugate, Former FEMA Administrator and Emergency Preparedness Expert, joins our Laura Cavanaugh to share what everyone should know about preparing for emergencies.
Fugate was the Head of FEMA during the Obama administration. He oversaw major weather events, including the Joplin and Moore tornadoes, Hurricanes Sandy and Matthew, as well as the 2016 Louisiana floods.
Fugate says that, from his experience, he has learned that the key differentiator in a better outcome is having an emergency plan in place.
He says being prepared for power outages with a reliable, portable power generator that can provide emergency power is essential.
“Think about the number of people that are power-dependent that need it for medical devices or mobility devices, like electric wheelchairs, or refrigerated medication,” said Fugate. “It’s not an inconvenience. It’s actually dangerous for them not to have power.”
The ability to stay connected to news sources and in contact with your friends and family are also keys to a better outcome.
When the lights go out, yours don’t have to. Jackery Power Solutions help give you the power when you need it most. These generators can harness the power of solar and can get you through power outages that last hours, even days.
As you create an emergency tool kit or winter storm, wildfire or earthquake preparedness checklist, Fugate recommends adding an emergency power supply to your disaster kit. He also recommends adding a battery-powered radio to your kit. Make sure your devices are charged. Fugate says this will allow you to stay connected to official sources of news and information during the disaster. Finally, he says, when the storm is over, let people know your status and that you are safe.
