Description
Sponsored by: ATV Safety Institute | There is nothing better than a beautiful fall day in San Diego – sunny skies, milder temperatures, vibrant colors and some of the best weather for outdoor recreation. One of the most popular ways to enjoy the outdoors is with ATVs, dirt bikes and side by sides.
Safety Expert Duane Taylor with the ATV Safety Institute and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association joins our Laura Cavanaugh with tips to help everyone make the most of their off-road adventures safely.
The first step before you embark on your next off-road adventure is to get trained. Sharpen your skills at courses and hands-on training that are vehicle-specific.
As you get ready to ride, don’t forget your pre-ride checklist. Walk around the vehicle. Check out the tires and brakes.
And don’t forget to gear up with the appropriate safety gear. Taylor says to always wear a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet and have proper eye protection. Wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots.
“You can also augment the appropriate safety gear with additional items including a chest and back protector, elbow guards, knee guards,” said Taylor. “Always gear up every time you ride.”
With regard to golden rules for the roads, Taylor says ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway on trails. He says ride and drive only in designated areas and trails at a safe speed. Do not blaze a new path.
“Be a good steward of the environment,” said Taylor. “In fact, in some trail areas, if you go off trail where you’re not supposed to, you may run into a law enforcement official who has a citation and fine ready for you. So stay on the designated trails.”
If you have children in your party, Taylor stresses that you must supervise riders under the age of 16 at all times. Remember ATVs and dirt bikes are not toys.
You can take the FREE online ATV eCourse or ROV eCourse. And for the best learning experience, take the hands-on ATV Rider Course, Basic Driver Course or Motorcycle Safety Foundation Dirt Bike School class.
