Description
A new era began at the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Monday as Chief Robert Logan took over as the department's 19th fire chief.
According to the department, Chief Logan is the third African-American to hold this position in the department's 134-year history.
"I never was the best student, but I was always the most hardworking person. That hard work paid off," said Chief Logan during an interview with CBS 8 Monday morning.
Chief Logan said it still feels surreal he's the new chief. He joked when he pulled into the chief's parking spot this morning, he had to pinch himself.
He grew up in the Southeastern part of San Diego, across the street from Lincoln High School. He said he was raised by his grandmother, a few doors down from Fire Station 12. He said he would often run to the window to watch the fire trucks go by. He knew from a young age he wanted to be a firefighter.
