Description
August 24, 1966
Last weekend the weather bureau announced the approach of giant waves from a hurricane off the coast of lower California. Hundreds of more adventurous surf addicts gathered at local beaches... waiting in vain for the storm surf that never arrived...
But for the world champion Windansea surfing team...it was quite different. TV-8 Cameraman Phil Barber, a surfer for fifteen years, had joined twenty-five of the younger members of the Windansea team for a chartered trip to the Todos Santos Islands, ten miles off the coast from Ensenada. Fishermen
passing these islands have reported enormous surf breaking in a channel between the islands. Well according to our surfing correspondent. the waves were big enough to keep anybody happy...and a little scared...some of the peaks reaching as high as fourteen and fifteen feet...breaking with tremendous force and terminating against a jagged cliff.
Though the Windansea team has become known throughout the world of surfing, rarely losing in a competitive event, maybe it’s understandable that a few of the members decided that It might be a good time to explore the Island, or 100k for Sea Gulls nests, or just stand on a cliff and watch their team mates lose out in their battle with Mother nature....•
