Description
For years the San Diego Pride parade has started in the heart of Hillcrest, making its way around the neighborhood’s iconic LGBTQ+ establishments.
“There’s some kind of magic being in that neighborhood,” said Jen LaBarbera the Interim Co-Executive Director of San Diego Pride.
That magic that LaBarbera describes starts at the intersection of University Avenue and Normal Street where the Pride flag flies high and proud and is also the spot where the Pride Parade kicks off.
But Hillcrest wasn’t always the “Gayborhood” it is today. In the late 1960’s, it was still a sleepy suburban town. Gay oppression and discriminatory laws were fueling the nation, until a wave of social activism started and inspired many people in the LGBTQ+ community to feel free to be who they are.
