This year a San Diego institution The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach is turning 50. The club is celebrating all summer long with special concerts featuring bands that have been rocking the BUT for years. The Mar Dels rocked the house on July 11th. The group formed in 1982. They play classic tunes from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. They’re still going strong with two original members, Doug Allen and Jesse Horner. Back in 1990 Larry Himmel hit the streets with the band delivering his own colorful commentary along the way. Photojournalist Jordan Ray talked to Allen backstage in between sets.
