Flames engulfed a vehicle on Interstate 8 in the rural southeastern reaches of the San Diego area Monday and spread into adjacent brushy terrain, where it soon blackened hundreds of acres and prompted widespread evacuations. By Tuesday morning, Cal Fire said the blaze charred an estimated 1,000 open acres and was 5% contained after fire crews were able to take advantage of the low fire intensity overnight.
